Publishing your book shouldn’t be put off again. You probably are among the 5% who want to go against the odds and publish their book at all cost only to realise their budget cannot cater for it.

How, then, can you publish your book without breaking the bank or even using your last savings? Go the self-publishing way!

I’m not going to keep you reading for long if you won’t get your answer straight away.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PUBLISHING

If there is self-publishing, there are other types of publishing. One of them is traditional publishing. You must have heard about it when people talk about the type of publishing where you write a book, send it to the publisher, and hope it gets published; if accepted, the publisher makes it ready for the market.

The problem, like you must have already known, is that your book might be rejected looking at the influx of books being published daily.

More than a million books are published in a year. You can imagine that! That isn’t to scare you, you just need to understand getting your book out shouldn’t be difficult when there are other ways to get it published.

J.K Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, talked about her ordeal at the hands of publishers, you don’t have to be another J.K Rowling. This isn’t to downgrade traditional publishing but to help you understand what it entails. Simply put, in traditional publishing, you don’t have to bear the financial burden; you get your pay in advance if your book is deemed “worth it”.

Another type of publishing is Hybrid publishing. Hybrid publishing is somewhere in between Traditional Publishing and Self-Publishing.

Hybrid publishing allows the author to take the financial responsibility and give you huge royalty. Even though your work is considered good, they won’t take that financial risk. You can read more about Hybrid publishing.

Let’s talk about Self publishing because it is one of the best ways (if not the best) to publish your book on a budget.

Self-publishing simply means you publish your book. You are responsible for everything done from writing to distribution.

Don’t get scared, it is quite easy.

In one of our articles, we explained how much it would cost you to publish a book considering some things like the editing, ISBN, book cover design, and all.

Before you go ahead to click that link, finish this to know the things you need to put into place.

1) Have a publishing plan

The success or failure of your budget is determined by the plan you have in place. A book doesn’t become a best seller by chance. You have to decide what path to take, and it doesn’t necessarily have to cost you much.

Some (if not all)  of these must be determined at this stage:

  • The demand on your niche
  • The publishing platform (if you are publishing eBooks)
  • How to go about editing your book.
  • How the book cover design would be done.
  • Your marketing and distribution plan

Having all these in place will ensure you don’t spend money on trial and error. Make adequate research on these things, and you will be glad you did. Remember you need to write a book that will sell. Check your book’s demand.

I am sure you haven’t found an article on budget discussing this.

2) Delegate the publishing processes that  you can

As much as we don’t encourage getting freebies every time, if you are on a budget, you might want to get other people to do some things for you for free. Do you have people who can serve as beta readers for your book? Let them read it and spread the word! You won’t have to spend unnecessarily on an ad, and you even get them to be a part of your launch team.

Can you see the wisdom in this?

Another thing you can delegate is your book design. Caution! You can give it to someone that can do it for free or use software like Canva. However, if you know it will make your work appear substandard, hire a professional.

 3) Get your book printed in batches.

You don’t have to stay as an Ebook author; you can have your book published in batches with at least 50 copies. There’s this kind of happiness that comes with holding your book in your hands. Fifty copies of your book can make you an author!

It isn’t expensive to do so. In print doctor Africa, we print as little as 50 copies to ensure your dream of becoming an author is accomplished. You can take up this offer.

If you feel you can’t afford it at once,  as and when writing this blog post, we have an offer on ground where you are allowed to pay in installments.

Your journey to Self-Publishing doesn’t have to be a herculean task when you have all these opportunities right before you. You can become an author on a budget!

To summarise, have a publishing plan, delegate some of the publishing processes and print your book in batches. Congratulations on your way to becoming a published author!
